What are the cups made of?
The types of cups I make are called stoneware. Stoneware is pottery that has been fired at a high temperature (about 1,200°C or 2,200°F) until vitrified, that is, glasslike and impervious to liquid. Wet clay is first formed into the desired shape and then airdried. It is then fired in a kiln to bond the clay particles together and further dry the clay. A kiln is special type of insulated oven that creates temperatures high enough to vitrify the clay. Since fired stoneware is nonporous, meaning it doesn't absorb moisture, it does not require a glaze. When a glaze is used, it serves a decorative function. This makes stoneware excellent for dinnerware because this process creates products that are food-safe.
Care Instructions
While my pottery is dishwasher and microwave safe, handwashing ensures longevity. Protect the glaze by using soft sponges or cloths and avoid abrasive cleaners that may scratch the surface. Avoid sudden temperature changes such as from the freezer to microwaving. Not recommended for use in an oven. Spot clean jute coaster.
